Market Drayton Advertiser: Ladies 1st XI v Wem Match Preview

Posted by James Coggins on Wednesday, October 26, 2011, In : Previews

Market Drayton Ladies this weekend welcome Wem to their Whitchurch home and club spokesperson Liz Booker is looking forward to the match: “Our matches with Wem are usually very competitive, close games.”

“They are always great to play in; we often take the lead but struggle to hold onto it.”

Market Drayton’s squad this year is much younger and Liz says this is a plus.

“They are all so skilful; we are going to use this to our advantage.”

Having only just lost...

Market Drayton Advertiser: 1st XI Stafford 1 MDHC 2

Posted by James Coggins on Tuesday, October 25, 2011, In : Match Reports

Market Drayton’s First XI continued their winning run last Saturday with a good win away at Stafford; it proved a tricky encounter that brought out the best fighting qualities from Drayton’s young side.

The game opened with both sides struggling to establish a passing rhythm; especially difficult with the number of stick tackles and fouls in the middle of the pitch, Stafford especially guilty of breaking down Drayton’s play. However Drayton looked the more likely to score as aerials f...

Market Drayton Advertiser: 3rd XI MDHC 1 Evesham 3

Posted by James Coggins on Tuesday, October 25, 2011, In : Match Reports

Yet another spirited performance from Market Drayton 3rd XI was not enough to snatch their first points of the season, as they went down to a fortunate Evesham side 3-1.

In an attempt to add some experience to a side in which half of the players are under the age of eighteen, Drayton drafted in seasoned veteran Mike Chevins to anchor the midfield. This allowed key men Ryan Cullen and Alfie Chevins a licence to get forward to challenge the away side's defence, and they did so impressively righ...

Market Drayton Advertiser: 2nd XI MDHC 3 Leamington 2

Posted by James Coggins on Tuesday, October 25, 2011, In : Match Reports

Market Drayton's second string were looking to continue their good form this weekend as they took on Leamington at Keele University. Leamington could only muster nine players to begin with due to travel problems on the M6 and Drayton took advantage of this passing the ball around to make use of the extra space, making their opposition work hard.

It was Drayton that inevitably struck first through John Rayson, who caused many problems all over the pitch with his direct running, giving the home...

Market Drayton Advertiser: 1st XI MDHC 4 Redditch 2

Posted by James Coggins on Monday, October 17, 2011, In : Match Reports

Following Market Drayton's fine display against recently relegated Old Wulfrunians last weekend they were looking for improvement, consolidation and another home win against another of the relegated sides from the West Midlands Premier Division. Redditch were the visitors to Keele University; and still possessing many of the squad from last year's campaign the Worcestershire side were sure to be looking to bounce straight back up. Although in the early weeks of the season, this had all of the...

Market Drayton Advertiser: 3rd XI Stafford 4 MDHC 0

Posted by James Coggins on Monday, October 17, 2011, In : Match Reports

With a young side, Market Drayton thirds travelled to Stafford, and were unfortunate to be on the wrong end of a 4-0 defeat. With a full compliment of players this week, Drayton were able to trial a 4-3-3 formation, which incorporated several positional changes. Skipper Thomas Chevins moved to left-back – having played in goal in the previous match, while Richard Jones moved to centre-forward and the ever impressive Toby Mellor took on a wider right wing role.

The game started brightly for ...

Market Drayton Advertiser: 2nd XI Pershore 1 MDHC 2

Posted by James Coggins on Monday, October 17, 2011, In : Match Reports

Market Drayton's Second XI faced a difficult task as they travelled away to Pershore this Saturday; knowing that they would have to be wary of the always competitive Pershore side, but after last week's win, Dave Poole's men were on a high and ready to ensure a committed and stylish performance.

With Kevin Caldecott returning to the line up, defensive solidarity was established and Drayton had a platform from which to build. It proved to be of paramount importance as Drayton made a flying st...

Market Drayton Advertiser: 3rd XI Pershore 3 MDHC 2

Posted by James Coggins on Monday, October 10, 2011, In : Match Reports

A newly formed Market Drayton 3rd XI started their campaign this week with a long away trip to Pershore, and despite a spirited performance, were on the end of a narrow defeat.

With severe availability issues, Drayton were forced to take a squad of just ten players, including three fourteen year olds, but against all odds they started the game brightly. The away side had the early possession, with Will Evans and new signing Tim Hopkins controlling the midfield, allowing youngsters Toby Mellor...

Market Drayton Advertiser: Captain's Log - Thomas Chevins

Posted by James Coggins on Monday, October 10, 2011, In : Captains' Logs

I thought it might be a tough start to the season, we were away from home with only ten players, and despite a few seasoned veterans at the back it was a youthful side – five out of the ten were under eighteen. Yet the attitude of the players was exemplary and the performance was fantastic. There's great promise for the future in this side, and I'm sure at least a couple of the youngsters will be First XI players in the future.

Alfie Chevins could prove to be a key player for us this season...

Market Drayton Advertiser: Captain's Log - Dave Poole

Posted by James Coggins on Monday, October 10, 2011, In : Captains' Logs

A much improved performance on last week- with not that many changes to the team. Playing with only ten men, and showing that we have the discipline and skill to control the game if we need to. This week we changed not only our style of play- passing the ball more confidently, but also our discipline as a team- I was pleased that we did not make one appeal, turned and faced the ball, and the home side with two home umpires made all of the appeals. The result reflected our determination- and t...

Market Drayton Advertiser: Captain's Log - James Joule

Posted by James Coggins on Monday, October 10, 2011, In : Captains' Logs

Sterling performance, the new formation was a great success and was a big improvement on last week. We had to defend under lots of pressure for large periods of the game but soaked it up well with some strong pressing and tight man marking. We didn’t create as many chances as the week before but were much more ruthless in front of goal with a much higher conversation rate. This season with new introductions to the side we have been able to deepen our strategic approach to the matches and re...

Market Drayton Advertiser: 1st XI MDHC 5 Old Wulfrunians 2

Posted by James Coggins on Monday, October 10, 2011, In : Match Reports

Market Drayton's Men's First XI entertained pre-season promotion favourites Old Wulfrunians at Keele University last Saturday looking to build on last week's good performance against Evesham and get points on the board to get their league campaign under-way.

James Joule was able to call on fit again Simon Rawsthorne replacing John Rayson with the rest of the side the same following last week's defeat.

Both Drayton and Old Wulfs started well, attacking from the off and passing the ball well in...

Market Drayton Advertiser: 2nd XI Barlaston 2 MDHC 6

Posted by James Coggins on Monday, October 10, 2011, In : Match Reports

Market Drayton's Second XI travelled away to Stone to play Barlaston following last Saturday's very disappointing start to the season, a 9-2 defeat to Bloxwich. Missing a key player in defence, Kevin Caldecott, and with only having ten players to call on captain Dave Poole was forced to reshape the defence. The players knew that they had to pull together and put last week's result to the back of their minds.

From the start Drayton played like a different team; playing with confidence in each ...

Market Drayton Advertiser: Joule Sees Promise In Performance

Posted by James Coggins on Sunday, October 2, 2011, In : Match Reports

Market Drayton's First XI travelled away to Evesham last Saturday in their MRHA West Midlands One season opener; Evesham having come down from the league above and Market Drayton looking to push on to promotion it was sure to be a tight, tense affair, an ordeal not helped by the thirty degree heat.

Drayton started strongly with a new formation and players looking comfortable in possession; stroking the ball around the pitch with conviction looking for their forward players by building play ...
