Posted by James Coggins on Thursday, March 15, 2012, In : Match Reports

Market Drayton's second eleven played Kidderminster at home last Saturday knowing that to achieve promotion they must win their remaining two fixtures.

An optimistic Drayton side started the game well and pressured Kidderminster from the off; the pressure soon turned to goals with Richard Rawsthorne providing some much needed strength and pace going forward.

It was Rawsthorne who opened the scoring thanks to some creative passing from the midfield.

The scoring continued as Drayton's pressure ...

Market Drayton Advertiser: 1st XI MDHC 3 Kidderminster 0

Posted by James Coggins on Friday, March 9, 2012, In : Match Reports

Market Drayton's first team entertained Kidderminster at Keele University on Saturday and knew that only a win would do if they were to remain in the promotion race.

Kidderminster had beaten Drayton earlier in the season and a team containing many old heads and plenty of experience proved difficult to break down early in the match.

But with top scorer Brendan Jones upfront Drayton found their touch and went one up the experience striker finishing from close range.

Kidderminster struggled to g...

Posted by James Coggins on Thursday, March 1, 2012, In : Match Reports

Market Drayton's first team came into this double game weekend knowing that positive results would give them momentum and the upper hand in the promotion race.

Drayton visited Wednesbury on Saturday; their opponents on a good run, occupying third position in the table, having played a game more than Drayton.

Wednesbury started the brighter, Drayton second to many challenges, their away form the fragile aspect of their season so far. The home side took the lead from a short corner after twenty...

Following two weeks of fixtures cancelled due to the cold weather Market Drayton's first team resumed their fixtures against Tamworth in a top of the table clash - the winners likely to hold a distinct advantage in the race for promotion.

Drayton started well, an intensity in their play that had been lacking in previous games against Old Wulfrunians and Redditch, and looked to capitalise on a tight hold of possession in the early exchanges.

Drayton created the better of the early chances; the...

Posted by James Coggins on Thursday, February 16, 2012, In : Match Reports

Market Drayton's second eleven were the only team in action last weekend as the cold weather ensured the majority of Midlands hockey fixtures succumbed to the elements.

Dave Poole's side travelled to Leamington on Sunday in what was billed as a promotion playoff; both sides level on points with Drayton ahead on goal difference behind runaway league leaders Bloxwich in the second promotion slot in the table.

Drayton started well closing down the home side effectively and limiting Leamington's ...

Market Drayton Advertiser: 1st XI Redditch 6 MDHC 2 & MDHC 4 Evesham 0

Posted by James Coggins on Thursday, February 2, 2012, In : Match Reports

Market Drayton's first eleven went into last weekend's double game weekend knowing that six points from the games against Redditch and Evesham would see them regain their spot at the top of the table following a run from before Christmas which has seen them on a three game winless streak.

Travelling to table toppers Redditch on Saturday they knew that potentially this could become a mid season title decider. After defeating the Worcestershire men 4-2 back in October at Keele Drayton knew tha...

Posted by James Coggins on Thursday, February 2, 2012, In : Match Reports

Drayton's second string came into last Saturday's game following a 7-1 win against Barlaston the week before and were hoping for another win to keep their promotion hopes alive. Although Pershore were bottom of the league Dave Poole's side knew not to expect an easy game.

As the game opened into the early stages Drayton passed the ball well creating chances but not being able to finish. It was infact Pershore who scored first from a well placed short corner which was put just out of keeper Da...

Following last week's victory over Pershore, Market Drayton's third string headed into their home tie against Stafford full of confidence. Yet despite another excellent performance, they ended up on the wrong end of a defeat.

The game started evenly, with both sides demonstrating a good short-passing game. For Drayton the forward movement was made by top-scorer Gareth Bowen, and youngster Alfie Chevins, whilst Richard Jones and Mike Chevins looked to fire the ball through from the back.

Market Drayton's first string resumed their league season on Saturday away at Wolverhampton club Old Wulfrunians. Having missed the week before due to a frozen pitch at Keele they came into the game level on points with Redditch and Tamworth at the top of West Midlands Division One.

Drayton, affected by traffic problems, began the game with nine men but kept an enthusiastic home side at bay – defensive interceptions and solid pressing didn't allow Old Wulfs any room to manoeuvre.

Market Drayton Advertiser: 3rd XI MDHC 5 Pershore 2

Posted by James Coggins on Wednesday, January 25, 2012, In : Match Reports

The game started slowly with both teams struggling in the icy conditions, Drayton were attacking well against the experienced Pershore defence and it was Lloyd Brakel who had the pick of the shots in the early stages with his strike zipping past the keeper's left post.

As the game progressed, fewer and fewer chances were being created by Drayton and Pershore were starting to get a better foot hold in the game.

However a rare short corner opportunity gave Drayton their second goal; Will Evans ...

Market Drayton's second eleven played Barlaston side looking to get their promotion form back after a disappointing defeat to Bloxwich last week.

Dave Poole's side were clearly relaxed going into the game and were expected to win given their strong league position.

In the opening exchanges it seemed their relaxed attitude would cost them; however they eventually started to play steadily and took the lead through some good skill from Kabir Bowry.

However Drayton weren't in control of the game ...

After a break in the second eleven's league programme they came into their fixture against Kingswinford looking for a continuation of the great form they have shown of late.

It was a fiery start from the visitors but this experienced Drayton side showed maturity and stuck to the good, attacking hockey that has served them well this season.

Drayton used the full width of the pitch to pass the ball around and through the Kingswinford defence on a number of occasions.

Market Drayton’s first eleven travelled away to Kidderminster last Saturday with high expectations; having beaten the teams around them comprehensively they were expected to beat mid-table Kidderminster with little complication.

However coming up against an experienced side on a surface that minimized Drayton’s capacity to play passing hockey it was a test that ultimately overcame the league leaders.

Several umpiring decisions early on halted Drayton’s attacking forays and with Kiddermi...

For Market Drayton’s First XI a trip to Tamworth promised more than a valuable away win; an early season promotion six pointer was on the cards. James Joule’s men, fresh from a convincing win at home to Leamington, were fully aware of the challenge awaiting them - knowing a win here would affirm their promotion credentials to the league.

It was another inspired performance by this youthful team that seems to just get better and better.

Drayton were 1-0 down at half time but the team kept their heads up and stuck to their guns, they knew that in the 1st half they were the better side, and only needed to keep the pressure up and find the back of the net.

Market Drayton Ladies failed to build on their fine performance at Telford and Wrekin, losing 3-0 to Wem in the Shropshire Ladies Hockey League.

In a bruising encounter at Sir John Talbot School, Whitchurch, Wem fielded a strong defensive side which gave Drayton very few opportunities to score.

Wem moved the ball around well and Drayton went in at half-time only 1-0 down, with goalkeeper Cassie Flower making some amazing saves on the floor and in the air.

Yet another spirited performance from Market Drayton 3rd XI was not enough to snatch their first points of the season, as they went down to a fortunate Evesham side 3-1.

In an attempt to add some experience to a side in which half of the players are under the age of eighteen, Drayton drafted in seasoned veteran Mike Chevins to anchor the midfield. This allowed key men Ryan Cullen and Alfie Chevins a licence to get forward to challenge the away side's defence, and they did so impressively righ...
